We begin with a thought experiment. Modern critical biblical scholarship often points out how the church's teachings about Jesus have become encrusted with tradition so that it is hard to see what the core documents—the New Testament—really say about him. Now, with the insight of 200 years of modern critical scholarship and assuming an audience that includes both the well-churched and the non-churched, how should the church present the story and identity of the central personality of their faith, Jesus of Nazareth? Many people will be surprised at the story they hear.

I heard about this book in an interview by NOMAD with N. T. (Tom) Wright. You can find the podcast of the interview in which Wright introduces his book "Simply Jesus" by doing a web search "Nomad 31: Tom Wright, academia, the new earth and Simply Jesus".In this interview, N. T. Wright comments on a number of topics (for example, he touches on a 'theology of place', suggesting that physical territory is more than just a commodity to be bought and sold - that we are connected to 'places' and these places can be part of God's 'creational renewal' of the earth today). You will find N.T. Wright's 5 minute introduction of what this book "Simply Jesus" is about at 20:15 - 25:35 on the podcast.
This book is about Jesus' kingdom campaign, about Jesus launching God's kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. Beginning with questions like "How can you say Jesus is now in charge of the world? If Jesus is in charge, why is the world in such a mess?", N. T. Wright explores the historical world of Jesus' day, who Jesus was and what he was doing, and why it still matters today. Wright uses the analogy of 'the perfect storm' as the framework for the book. The movie "The Perfect Storm" is about three massive weather systems converging in one place to create 'the perfect storm'. Similarly, Wright explains, there were three massive movements converging in Jesus' day creating enormous upheaval and change. The three movements were the ruling Roman empire controlling the political and economic state of affairs in the Middle East, the 1,000-year-old national aspiration of the Jewish people for liberation and global expansion, and thirdly, God's agenda which Jesus showed was quite different from what the Jews expected it to be.
The final chapter of the book asks what does all this mean for us today? Wright suggests there are thousands, actually millions, of ways today that Jesus is renewing the earth, through those who in some way work with him in this renewal.

Simply Jesus Why he was what he did why it matters edition by Tom Wright Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
A little bit patronising, with too many lengthy quotations to bulk out the copy - a reference would have been sufficient for one to read the narrative in the Bible - not all readers are lazy. I would have preferred to be shown how the tension between universalism and particularism in the Jewish Scriptures disappeared into particularism by the time of Jesus and was the religion he learned from his parents - or did he have a God-slot that made him different from the rest of us. Was he aware of this Godlike stature given to him, then how could he be tempted in all ways like as we are if he has the Godbox advantage. Did he not naturally and unselfconsciously live the life of the kingdom (his word for the New Creation) in which all the harmonies of the garden are restored)?
This is a brilliant book, with lots of background information. A truly thought provoking read, but clearly and interestingly written.A must for anyone serious about their walk with God.
Tom Wright has wonderfully dismantled the common perceptions of Jesus and his role in the world. He unpacks Jesus as the true Messiah and the amazing implications of this for the world we live in and His church. Loved it
I found myself verbally speaking out with gasps of awe at the revelation of Jesus Christ as King of this living, moving, dynamic Kingdom. I've been studying books about the Kingdom of God for years now and this one is absolutely the most beautiful and grandest so far. I cannot recommend it highly enough. You will be challenged and you will see something of Christ you may never have seen before.
Tom Wright knows his subject, the New Testament, to the nth degree and reading his work teaches and informs in so many ways that at the end of the book one always knows so much more then when on began reading. I love Tom Wright's books and have all of them which i read often to inform and for reference. Money spent buying a Tom Wright book is money well spent.
I listened to a number of NT Wright's podcasts, which opened up so much of the gospel and it's realities and good news for this part of our journey prior to Christ's return, that I decided to read this book. Praise to God for this clear and concise presentation of the gospel! It's so important that we grasp the significance of the work Jesus has been doing and will be doing until He returns, and how His Kingdom has broken through into this world. This book is a God-given gem.
Instead of reading the Gospels with a modern frame of reference, Wright lets us see Jesus in his own context and with the historical, cultural background of his audience and times. The book doesn't stop with the past, but includes how the person of Jesus affects the present and future of the whole world, in ways that most modern Christians I know don't think about it or talk about it.
