Originally published in Sydney 1914 in a Limited Edition, this rare early dog book is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. A later, and still very scarce edition was enlarged and revised with the addition of many early dog breed photographs. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished this edition using the original text and photographs, as part of their Classic Breed Books series. Although this book deals mainly with observations, history and research on the Kelpi, Heeler, and other Australian Sheep and Cattle Dogs, several other dog breeds peculiar to Australia are discussed in some detail. Two hundred and fifty six pages contain twenty two comprehensive chapters- The Origin of the Dog. - Variations of the Dog Species. - Creation of Tame Dogs. - The Noble Dingo. - The Australian Cattle Dog. - The Kelpie. - The Barb. - Sheep-dog Trials. - Judging and Buying. - Kangaroo Dogs. - Bush Greyhounds. - True Greyhounds. - Beagles. - Cocker Spaniels. - Fox Terriers. - Alsatian Wolf Dog. - Laws on Dogs. - Dog Fighting. - Dog Fancying. - Australian Dog Workers. - A Premier Sheep-dog Trial Judge. - "God's Dogs". This is a fascinating read for any Sheep and Cattle Dog enthusiast or historian of the breeds, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

This book is very and comprises a collection of bush bush folk lore. The author claims that the dingo originated in Australia and spread to the rest of the world. The author claims that the dog evolved from the Thylacine and that bears evolved from Tasmanian Devils. Mr Kaleski also claims that the Kelpie originated from a dog/fox cross breeding. he clearly had no understanding of evolution or genetics. Despite the aforementioned faults the book is a very entertaining read.Product details

Australian Barkers and Biters A Vintage Dog Books Breed Classic Australian Cattle Dog Robert Kaleski 9781905124756 Books Reviews
While I have not read this book cover to cover, I can say that it gives an interesting perspective on dogs of Australia, including history and personal opinions of the author. That was not, however, what I was looking for in this book. I was looking for breed characteristics, behavior issues, and generalities of the breed. The title is also deceiving. I was looking for a book on the Australian Cattle Dog, and only one chapter is devoted to this dog. In that one chapter, most of the commentary is on herding and training the dog to herd. Overall I would say that it is a nice novelty book, but it doesn't give any really important or current information that a cattle dog owner would enjoy.
I bought this book specifically because I love Australia, Australian dog breeds, and breed lineages and histories. This book covers a broad spectrum of dogs throughout Oz, and is written in fine detail
and with charm.
I am still waiting on this book! Six months later!! Please fulfill the purchase that I made six months ago.
